60 minutes without light to save humanity

Earth Hour 2019

All people, who are not indifferent to the fate of our planet, will turn off the lights in their homes and offices for one hour on March 30 at exactly 20:30 Moscow time. This is the WWF International Earth Hour campaign, which in 2019 will be held for the 13th time. The main task of Earth Hour is to awaken the interest of people all over the world to environmental problems: climate change, the destructive influence of humans on ecosystems, environmental pollution and so on.

For the first time, this event was organized in 2007 under the auspices of the World Wide Fund for Nature and in just a couple of years reached literally a global scale, becoming the most massive environmental action in the history of mankind. Then, 10 years ago, a billion people participated in it, and last year the number of participants doubled. Russia joined the project in 2009, and since then the number of Russians who are not indifferent to the environment has been growing every year.

25 years anniversary of the WWF’s Russian representative office opening will be celebrated at summer, and Earth Hour 2019 in Russia will be special - a survey entitled “Answer for nature!” is timed to coincide with it. It will help assess the level of eco-enlightenment of the inhabitants of the country and determine what problems in terms of ecology concern them. After analyzing the information obtained during the survey, the organizers hope to determine a certain coefficient of environmental activity for each region. The survey on the topic, perhaps, will be the most ambitious in history, since every year the Earth Hour attracts at least one hundred thousand Internet users.

According to information from the authoritative Analytical Center of Yuri Levada, many Russians are confident that the responsibility for the country's environmental well-being lies with the authorities. However, the international campaign Earth Hour 2019 again calls to think about the fact that the existing global problems can be solved only together. “Conscious attitude of citizens to the environment and business support is the key to the health of the planet. Without them, any measures aimed at preserving nature will not bring tangible results”, said Yevgeny Schwarz, director of environmental policy at the WWF Russia.

The Earth Hour on March 30, 2019 again calls upon the inhabitants of the planet to turn off the lights and household appliances for at least 60 minutes in order to express their indifference to pressing environmental issues. Particular value of such events have large cities, which accounts for the bulk of consumed natural resources. For example, almost two thousand buildings turned off the light as part of the action last year in Moscow. It is expected that this time there will be no less of them - 15 cultural parks, the Bolshoi Theater, the Ostankino TV Tower and other objects will join the event. Zaryadie Park will become the central platform of the action, as well as a contest for the best eco-flashmob among schoolchildren timed to the Earth Hour in Moscow.

The World Wildlife Fund again appeals to everyone to think about their own role in maintaining the ecological balance on the planet. Most likely, we have not much time left to reverse the process of its destruction. Do not remain indifferent!
