Wind energy exclusively for Google

Wind energy exclusively for Google

More and more large companies around the world turn to the practice of using renewable energy sources. Now they are joined by the largest Internet search engine Google, whose offices consume about 3 gigawatts of energy a month.

The beginning of this story was laid at the end of last year, when Google signed contracts with three energy companies for the purchase of alternative energy. It is difficult for a person to imagine what 3 gigawatts are, but in this context it is enough to know that this is more than San Francisco consume, the city with a million inhabitants, which occupies 12th place in the US population.

The signing of these contracts has made Google the world's largest corporate energy buyer, derived from alternative sources. Now the corporation acquires it in a larger volume than Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Apple, taken together.

The corporation announced its intention in 2016, when its vice-president promised in the very near future to completely transfer all offices to provide energy from renewable sources. From words to deeds, the search engine executives switched over unexpectedly quickly. As early 2017, Google invested slightly less than $ 4 billion in 26 energy projects, which now, after a year, will provide the company with safe energy by 100%. Most of it will be obtained from wind power stations, the rest - from solar power stations.

Google does not think to stop and it's looking to the future. Working for the future, the corporation plans to expand its office network and is already thinking about how to provide them with energy not derived from fossil fuels. Now the amount purchased is so much more than the company consumes to date, but the search engine's management promises to expand its portfolio of alternative energy sources. Today, most of them (about 2/3) are located on the territory of the United States and, in particular, in South Dakota.

In the future, Google promises to continue the development of renewable energy sources and pay attention to the regions where this is still treated without much trepidation. Such a step will make it more accessible there, and will also promote large-scale distribution and global introduction of "clean" energy in all large territories not only in the USA, but also in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland and other countries, where Google has offices.

"We decided that Google can create conditions for improving people's lives, reducing the dependence of mankind on valuable natural resources and fossil fuels", - the company's management explained its strategy. The corporation hopes that other large consumers of electricity will be as example, in order to make our planet cleaner and healthier by joint efforts.
