Color psychology

Psychologists say that choosing the right color in the design of a house is the key to the emotional balance of its inhabitants. Each shade affects the person in its own way: some inspire creativity, others improve the appetite, and others relax or encourage action. Considering these features, color solutions in interior design should be given special attention.

Color perception is subjective and is determined by many factors. So, for example, black does not cause a negative among the Japanese, who consider it the color of wisdom, but it oppresses the Slavs, who defined it as a symbol of mourning. Gained expirience influences the attitude, that is why the surgeon who works in the blue operating room will sleep restlessly in a bedroom of a similar color. However, there are general principles of premise's color design, which can be taken as a basis and adjusted at their discretion.

The base of the palette consists of three colors - yellow, blue and red. Their mixture gives secondary colors - green, orange, purple, and already their combinations form tertiary shades. Psychologists consider the use of related colors in the interior. At the same time, they note that the whole palette is divided into cold and warm shades, and it is important to consider their emotional load in room designing.

The red-yellow spectrum is warm and exciting. Red colour is the most controversial, because in its pure form it is better to use it as an accent. When there is a lot of red colour, the pulse quickens, there is a feeling of danger and a desire to leave the room. At the same time, his “relative” orange is a positive color, and it is especially relevant to the place in the kitchen, because it stimulates the appetite. It also encourages action, increases activity, which is good in the office, in the sports area, but not in the children's room, where overexcitation of the child is useless. Yellow colour is a gift of the sun, which charges with cheerfulness. Its light shades bring additional light into the interior, but too bright colour with time will tire and cause anxiety.

The cold blue-green spectrum soothes ... but sometimes to the point of apathy. Blue colour reduces pressure and slows the heart rate, it is good to meditate and fall asleep. But eating food in its environment is uncomfortable - it inhibits appetite. Not the best friend in the kitchen is green, because the food on its background looks less tasty. But it is most pleasing to the eye, relaxes and relieves arousal.

Brown color is neutral and natural, symbolizes wood, clay and soil. It gives a feeling of security, stability and warmth. Today, this color scheme is being used more and more, in creating trendy eco-designs. Another calm and subtlely elegant color is gray, but the hue determines the emotional reaction to it. Gray-yellow, according to psychologists, is the most depressive, and the colder gray in combination with white creates an atmosphere of freshness and weightlessness. White itself is a symbol of purity. It visually increases the space, but in large numbers causes negative associations.

The described psychological reactions are average, and it happens that in the same room people feel differently. Therefore, in the apartment's design of the common areas, it is desirable to take into account the wishes of the whole family. In general, for the design of the bedroom, experts recommend delicate tones of blue and green. For the living room - warm red, yellow and brown, because they dispose to communication. In a dead-end situation, it is better to turn to beige shades and yellow light - it is usually comfortable for everyone in such interior. Green and brown increase concentration, so they are good for home office. A bouquet of orange flowers will become a stimulator of inspiration in the office.

Approaching to the choice of paint, wallpaper and furniture, it is important to take into account the lighting. For example, warm gray with an abundance of sunlight gives a feeling of comfort and security, but if the room has a single window facing north, the overall atmosphere in it will be oppressive. In addition to light, symmetry plays a role in the perception of the interior. The asymmetric space causes a feeling of anxiety, and the mirror-shaped space brings harmony and psychological balance. Another nuance - the contours. Sharp angles say: “Caution!”, and the sleek bends soothe.

The psychology of color design is a young science, so you should not blindly follow someone else's advice. Listen to your own feelings, and then your house will definitely become your fortress.
