May Day 2019

May Day 2019

Special holiday is celebrated every year in different parts of the world - International Workers' Day. In total, more than 80 countries of the world express gratitude and respect to workers of all professions by colorful processions, concerts and mass celebrations.

By tradition, peaceful demonstrations, concerts with guest stars, fairs, folk festivals and all kinds of flash mobs are organized for the holiday. Processions of various sizes are held throughout Russia, but the most massive gather in Moscow. This year, no less than one hundred thousand people will join the ranks of the trade unions, united by the slogan “For a fair economy in the interests of the working man!”. However, now on this date not only workers are honored, but people simply rejoice at the arrival of spring heat, the flowering of all life and the approach of summer. Today, May 1 is the day of spring and labor, which all Russians love and expect.

Most of the post-Soviet space, as well as China, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Austria and other countries also celebrate May 1, which is also called the Labour Day, or the International Worker's Day. The French give each other lilies of the valley for happiness, and the Sicilians - daisies. The Italians celebrate Valentine's Day and flowers, wearing wreaths of roses and carnations on their heads. And in ancient times they worshiped Maya, the goddess of fertility, so that the expended spring labor  would not be in vain.

The Finns have their own May Day, which they call Vappu Day. Here it is dedicated not only to all working people, but also to students who wear white caps and start having fun since the evening of April 30th. The Germans at the same time dress up in the costumes of evil spirits and celebrate Walpurgis Night, and in the morning, as if nothing had happened, they go to the traditional processions of trade unions.

But in South Africa, this holiday is held under the patronage of the authorities, remaining solely as the Day of Worker's Solidarity. It is also the same for the citizens of Turkey, who are performing a march written by a Turkish poet at every demonstration. And the Chinese, almost like the Russians, rest in early May for several days and also participate in festive processions.

Under one name or another, such a holiday exists in the vast majority of states, but in many it is set to other dates. For example, Japan celebrates Worker's Day day on November 23, and in the United States, celebrations of workers are held on the first Monday of autumn. Nevertheless, about 80 countries of the world do not have anything similar to our May Day in their holiday calendars.
