Victory Day 2018

Victory Day 2018

73 years have passed since the day when the Flag of Victory rose above the Reichstag. Our country still had a long way to recover and the hardships of the post-war years, but the war was finally over.

Today horrors of the war years remember only a few surviving veterans. But the whole country thanks on Victory Day for the great feat accomplished for the sake of peace and freedom of future generations.

The most extensive festive program this year, as in the past, was in the Russian capital. The parade on May 9, 2018 on Moscow's Red Square again astonished with its scale. Demonstration of thecountry's military power leaves no one indifferent, and the live broadcast of the parade once again chained the Russians to the TV screens for an hour and a half. The bends of aviation and convoys of armored vehicles, a harmonious march of infantry and artillery left no doubt that the country is under reliable protection.

For the seventh time the Immortal Regiment marched in a harmonious column on the Victory Day in all cities of Russia (and even far beyond its borders). A sad, but solemn, action is dedicated to the memory of the relatives and friends killed in the war. It was born in 2012 in Tomsk and rapidly has acquired extraordinary popularity.

This year, the army of heroes who long ago left this world, walked along the main streets of the capital for over an hour. In other cities, the march took place with no less scope. The Immortal Regiment 2018 looked from photographs at the central squares of all major cities of the country, as well as the former union republics, and even European countries.

Victory Day on May 9 is celebrated not only in Russia, but also almost throughout the CIS. Parades, the laying of wreaths at monuments, concerts and field kitchens, salutes and exhibitions marked the anniversary of the End of Second World War in Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and many other countries

But not only the post-Soviet space remembers the events of the Great Patriotic War. Undoubtedly, the holiday of Victory on May 9, as in Russia, is not celebrated anywhere. But in many European countries there is a Memorial Day, which, however, falls on the 8th of May, because of the time difference.

For example, in France this day is an official holiday and takes place almost the same as in Russia - with its own parade, the president's speech and mass festivities. But there it is the Day of Victory over Fascism. On the same day, the Czech Republic also celebrates, military equipment exhibitions are held, and sign-fighting battles are under way. Great Britain, Denmark, Holland celebrate the holiday more modestly, massively placing flowers at the foot of memorials and monuments to the Unknown Soldier.

It is noteworthy that on May 8 the Victory over Nazism is remembered in Germany. Usually, no official events are held on this day, but private events of museums and social movements do not allow to forget about the events of the war years. Modern Germans do not identify themselves with fascists, and the development of their own history on an ongoing basis begins in this country from the school bench.
