Why modern families do not want to have children?

Childfree

In the world, the movement of childfree (“free from children”) is gaining momentum - more and more young women and men refuse to have a child for a variety of reasons. Studies say that most often this decision is made by people who are educated, wealthy and ambitious, as well as those who were the only child in the family or had problems with their parents.

The phenomenon of childfree has drawn a clear line between forced and voluntary childlessness. If in the past people sympathized with childless family (they did not fulfill their duty to society, they did not fulfill themselves as parents), today the absence of children has become one of the manifestations of choice freedom. Not surprisingly, this wave originated in the United States - the most free and democratic country in the world. The ideology quickly found supporters in developed countries, did not bypass Russia.

Polls claim that today more and more residents of large cities are joining the childfree movement, but the bulk of the population still supports the institution of a classic family with children. Nevertheless, experts believe that the part of voluntarily childless people around the world will steadily grow.

There is an opinion in society that childfree hates children, but this is not always the case. Most people who do not want to leave offspring are loyal to other people's babies, and some even choose professions related to their upbringing and development. Also, among those who consciously refused to be parents, there are those who have chosen such a position temporarily — until they reach the desired age, career growth, social status or for other reasons. Unfortunately, it is often when “temporarily” transformes into “forever” for health reasons or by virtue of habit.

Childfree explain their choices in different ways. First of all, it is the unwillingness to sacrifice personal space and time for the sake of the child and the absence of a convincing reason to have children in general. Some say that they have enough pets, younger family members (brothers, sisters, nephews) or even working projects that they cherish and grow even with bigger enthusiasm. Also, among the reasons for refusing of procreation, many distinguish a frank disgust for children ... Is this normal? Psychologists and sociologists are trying to understand these issues, but so far they do not find an unequivocal answer.

One of the reasons is the reluctance to sacrifice personal space and time for the sake of the child.

"I do not like children. I am happy, realizing myself in work (study, sport, hobby). I want to travel and develop myself. I want to live for myself ... I do not want a child!" So usually chayldfree answer the question about the reasons for refusing of procreation. Experts are trying to find out what lies behind the "I do not want". So, people who have received psychological trauma in childhood often do not want to become parents. Consciously, women with poor health, as well as representatives of both sexes, in whose families hereditary diseases are observed prefer not to experience with the fate. But among those who are voluntarily childless, the most are those who subconsciously challenge society, follow fashion, or want to stand out. There are those who simply “have not ripened” - many women and men today even at 40 feel like teenagers, so what kind of children are we talking about? Society has changed, and with it the attitude to parenthood.

Sadly, among the "free from children" the share of haters is also large, and some online communities are almost extremist. In fairness, it is worth noting that the prolifers (activists against abortion, supporters of large families, etc.) are not inferior in their harshness to their childless opponents. And here it is difficult to figure out what is the reason, and what is the consequence. Today, these two opposing camps feed each other and have the same negative effect on the formation of a healthy concept of family and parenthood among young people.

Among women, the percentage of those who do not want to have offspring is lower than among men, but at the same time it is more categorical or aggressive-minded. Modern ladies on the wave of feminism strive to be independent and be realized in something else besides motherhood. Many are afraid of becoming unattractive, others - “to wallow in diapers”, and others - to acquire loans and mortgages.

Positive examples of a successful combination of career, sports lifestyle and motherhood fade against the background of light life, not burdened with worries about the younger generation. The management system in the form of raising family values is no longer effective, and the brake, which earlier was the censure of society, no longer works. Today there are no laws prohibiting being childless, and society is increasingly loyal to this phenomenon ... But experts note that most young childfree over time reconsider their views and regret of lost time, and doctors claim that physically and psychologically it is much easier to give birth and to raise a child when you are young, than in 40−45, when it becomes convenient.
