Remote education

Remote education

Virtuality penetrates into real life, affecting all spheres of human activity. This trend and the education system have not been circumvented - electronic magazines, diaries and teaching aids no longer surprise anyone. Online courses are now also not new, and many employers are even more willing to hire those who remotely studied at a prestigious business school than graduates of a technical school ...

Academic education is losing its prestige, and remote education (RE) seems more and more attractive, however, with all the advantages of the trend, everything is not as clear as it seems.

The pros and cons of remote aducation at school, at the institute and after, in adulthood, cannot be considered one-sided - what is good for an adult, the student will only do harm. So, among the obvious advantages of RE is the flexibility of the study schedule. At a distance, the student himself determines when it is better to study, and this is great if you need to combine study with work or when a person likes to sleep.

Otherwise, a flexible schedule is not better than a Trojan horse - it promises comfort and a lot of free time, but in fact leads to the fact that the student, not knowing how to organize leisure, work and study, puts off the latter “for later” and is constantly in stress. For children, such “flexibility” is completely useless - unorganized due to their age, they learn to plan a day while attending school, and in general they lose their orientation in space.

Another publicized advantage of RE is time saving. Studying remotely, you do not need to spend minutes or hours on the road. But this coin also has a downside. If one person spends his free time to good use - he reads a book, prepares dinner, goes to workout, sleeps not for four hours, but seven necessary for the body - then the other one will “freeze” in a computer game or in social networks, and so the freed up time will go, rather, into harm, not good.

The peculiarity of distance learning courses is that they represent an extremely narrow complex of knowledge. There is no physical education, philosophy, culturology and other “unnecessary” disciplines that students of vocational schools and universities are forced to take. For a working person who knows exactly what he wants to get from the course, and why he needs it, this is an undeniable plus. For an ordinary student, it’s rather a minus, because any knowledge broadens one’s horizons and is never superfluous.

Another feature of distance education is accessibility. Remote education allows you to study anywhere in the world where there is Internet access: at home, in a cafe or in any country ... It sounds tempting, but in fact it is useful only to those who spend a lot of time traveling. For students and schoolchildren, the practical benefits of such accessibility are obvious only when it comes to additional developmental courses that cannot be visited “live” in your city.

But the most insidious feature of RE is the lack of control by the teacher. Any student dreams that no one should stand above his soul, reminding daily of the approaching deadline. In this light, the transition to distance learning seems like a fairy tale! However, there is one “but” - after all, control does not disappear anywhere, but only passes into the sphere of responsibility of the student, and in fact not everyone is able to cope with it.

Self-organization, the ability to plan a day, set priorities and fight laziness are qualities without which it is impossible to organize study at home. By the way, deciding to undergo distance learning, it is worthwhile to understand that it is unified and does not imply an individual approach - in most cases, the material will have to be mastered independently, without additional explanation.

Given the above, it can be concluded that the remote education system is a great opportunity for adults, conscious, motivated people to improve their skills or learn something new. However, most representatives of young people should consider this option only as an additional education, but not in any way instead of the basic one.

For children, according to psychologists and teachers, remote education is generally not shown. School is a place where they not only gain knowledge, but also learn to communicate with people of different ages, solve conflicts, defend their point of view ... and just live. Indeed, contrary to the fashion trend for virtuality, we still exist in society and sooner or later we encounter all the “charms” of the real world.
